This page applies to applications for the Student Award Scheme
The Trustees of the Douglas Bomford Trust are keen to encourage students of agricultural engineering to achieve appropriate qualifications and to go on to successful careers in the industry in whatever area is best suited to their talents and motivation.
Douglas Bomford Student Awards will be awarded on a competitive basis to those applicants who best demonstrate how the Award will be used to enhance their studies and personal development.
Am I eligible to apply?
You are eligible if you are a Student Member of IAgrE registered on a taught course of study in the United Kingdom or Ireland.
Post graduate students are not eligible. The Trust has separate arrangements for supporting post graduate students visit applications
What is the Scholarship?
Awards are made on an annual basis and are typically for 1 year in the range of £500 - £1000 depending on the application.
Scholarships may be awarded to provide particular support to a programme of study or project work through the provision of materials, equipment, computing hardware and software for example or for any other specified requirement.
Cases where genuine financial hardship is inhibiting or preventing study will also be considered.
There are separate arrangements for travel scholarships – visit applications
How do I apply?
You should think carefully about your application, bearing in mind that funds are limited and you are competing against other applicants.
Applications should be emailed to enquiries@dbt.org.uk and headed ‘Student Award Application’.
Your application should provide the following information.
- Your name, age, existing qualifications, University or College, Course of study, and the stage at which you are at on the course.
- A brief CV
- A letter of support from your tutor or other appropriate member of University or College staff
- Why you want a career in Agricultural Engineering, what you would like to do and what you hope to achieve. (max 500 words)
- Why you are applying for an award and how it will be used.(max 500 words)
You can apply for an award in any year even if you have been awarded one previously.
Applications must be submitted by October 31st
What happens next?
All applications will be assessed by a panel on behalf of the Board of Trustees.
Applicants may be called for interview, in which case reasonable expenses will be paid by the Trust.
All applicants will be informed of the outcome by December 15th.
Award winners will also be announced in the IAgrE Journal ‘Landwards’.
The decision of the trustees is final.
How will the scholarship be administered?
At the time the award is made the methods of payment, payment schedules and reporting requirements will be agreed.
What will I have to do?
You will have to use the award as set out in your application.
You will be responsible for informing the Trust of any changes that will affect this.
You will be required to produce a report that explains clearly how the award has been used and what has been achieved as a result.
